The Swiss voted in a high stakes referendum to decide whether or not to continue to freely allow in workers from the neighbouring European Union. Polling booths were due to close at noon (1100 GMT) in the ballot on the Swiss government’s attempt to prolong the accord with the EU on free movement of labour and to extend it to workers from the bloc’s most recent members, Bulgaria and Romania.
